Magnesium Chloride

A number of state highway departments throughout the country have decreased the use of rock salt and sand on roadways and have increased the use of liquid magnesium chloride and especially magnesium chloride blends as de-icers ad anti-icers.

Liquid magnesium chloride or magnesium chloride blend can be sprayed on dry pavement prior to precipitation or wet pavement prior to freezing temperatures to prevent snow and ice from bonding to the road in an effort to improve highway safety. The use of this product seems to show an improvement in driving conditions during and after freezing.

Magnesium Chloride may be the best total ice-melter causing less metal corrosion, less concrete damage, being less toxic and more environmentally safe than Calcium Chloride and Sodium Chloride (rock salt).

Magnesium chloride is less irritating to the skin, corrodes metal surfaces less, is safer around vegetation, is safer on concrete, is safer for use around animals and humans, is environmentally friendlier, is safer and tracks less than Calcium Chloride, and is an effective road salt prewetting agent. When used as recommended, magnesium chloride will not harm vegetation.

New magnesium chloride blends improve on these properties substantially while increasing the ice melting power. Magnesium chloride alone’s lowest practical working temperature is down to 5° F. New blends can be effective at much lower temperatures, while all deicers work better and faster when the temperature is above 10°F.

Two main issues have been raised regarding the anti-icer magnesium chloride. One is that liquid magnesium chloride has electrical conductivity which can arc across electric utility insulators. Also Magnesium chloride is corrosive to metal and can cause corrosion of steel and aluminum poles and pole hardware. That is why magnesium chloride blends are gaining popularity. Especially those that increase the deicing effectiveness of magnesium chloride while mitigating negative effects. Some hybrid blends are very effective in reducing the corrosive nature of magnesium chloride and potentiating the power of magnesium chloride as a deicer.

Magnesium is a naturally occurring mineral which is important in the body especially for muscles and nerves. Medical grade magnesium chloride is sometimes used as a supplement in people to maintain adequate magnesium in their bodies.

Before taking magnesium chloride a person needs to consult a doctor to see if he or she has any other medical conditions, allergies, or other medicines including herbal health supplements that may be of concern. Magnesium chloride may not be recommended in some situations, such as kidney disease. Only take magnesium chloride exactly as directed by your doctor and as directed on the package. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.

Symptoms of magnesium chloride overdose include nausea, vomiting, and flushing.
