Icenator compared to salt.Compared to salt, Icenator has advantages of working in lower temperatures, being more environmentally friendly, is less caustic, is safer for landscaping, is safer for people, animals and equipment, is less messy and easier to apply.
Use rates are usually from 1gallon to 500 to 1000 square feet.
1 gallon of Icenator is roughly equivalent in coverage to 50 lbs of salt. ¼ ton of salt per acre would roughly correspond to 10 gallons of liquid, ½ ton to 20 gallons, ¾ ton to 30 gallons, and 1 ton to 40 gallons of Icenator per acre. 40 gallons per acre is which is roughly equivalent to 1 gallon per 1,000 square feet.
You would most likely apply the liquid more heavily on sidewalks, stairs and problem areas than the rate used for general broadcasting in parking lots. As with salt and all deicers, results and effective use rates will vary with weather conditions.
You can use Icenator with salt at a rate of 5 – 15 gallons of Icenator per ton of salt and cut the use of salt roughly in half. The mixture will also work at lower temperatures than salt alone.
If it is warm enough for salt to work (above 23F or so) rock salt has the advantage of being in clumps that stick around to burn though existing ice or melt snow as it falls. Liquid deicer will melt a thin layer of ice instantly, but if the ice is thick at all the liquid tends to run off as it melts the ice making it less effective on thick existing ice. If you have thick existing ice use Icenator with salt or some other pelleted product in order to help keep the liquid in place so it can burn through the ice and migrate underneath it. Once the liquid migrates underneath the ice it will help to loosen the ice making mechanical removal more practical.
If you pretreat with liquid, depending on weather conditions, the liquid tends to sit under snow due to the air pockets in snow and it will help keep the snow from bonding to the road surface. When you remove the snow mechanically there is active product underneath to help melt residual snow. If you spray liquid on existing snow it will penetrate to the bottom because it weighs 11 pounds per gallon and make the snow slushy for mechanical removal - depending on weather conditions.
If you pretreat with liquid and no storm develops the liquid will stay in place until it mechanically wears off or is washed off. Depending on traffic levels, Icenator tends to stay in place for around 2 weeks waiting for an ice, snow or rain storm.
Icenator has a light amber color so you can see where it and whether or not it is still there. Iceantor washes off readily with water and we have had no complaints of Icenator staining anything.
Icenator is an excellent deicer and powerful tool in the ice and snow removal arsenal.
