This site provides research, articles, information and discussion related to ice melting and liquid deicing alternatives. These alternatives include salt, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium magnesium acetate, urea, potassium acetate, liquid ice melt, hybrid blends and other options.
The formation and melting of ice is a classic straggle of man vs. nature. Ice accumulation causes roads, parking lots, sidewalks and steps to become human-health hazards. Ice melt and liquid deicing products can be powerful weapons adding safety and saving lives. But like antibiotics, painkillers and even herbal remedies, most products have good and bad attributes. All products have specific conditions in which they are most effective and some level of potential side effects to be considered.
When choosing liquid ice melts and deicing products we are called upon to balance short term ice related human-health concerns with other short and long term considerations including environmental impact, safety for humans, animals and plants, efficacy, damage to structures and equipment and cost.
The idea of using something to melt ice doesn't seem like rocket science on the surface. Surprisingly, much of the research surrounding ice melt and deicing products can be confusing if not seemingly contradictory. In the articles below, our purpose is to put any personal bias aside while presenting valid and useful information about the science of ice melt and deicing products.
